Surgery & Procedures Q & A

What are some examples of surgery and procedures?

Southdale ObGyn provides comprehensive gynecologic care, including in-office, outpatient, and hospital-based surgery and in-office procedures. Some examples include:

  • Minimally invasive surgeries
  • Hospital admission
  • Urinary incontinence treatment
  • Hysterectomy
  • Sterilization

One of the most common gynecological surgery and procedures, a hysterectomy, is the removal of the entire uterus to treat multiple menstrual problems and can be performed vaginally, laparoscopically, abdominally, or with robotic assistance.

What are my options for sterilization surgery and procedures?

Southdale ObGyn performs:

Laparoscopic tubal ligation

A part of your fallopian tube is removed using 2-3 tiny incisions in the belly. Sometimes the whole tube is removed.

Tiny metal coils are inserted into fallopian tubes using a device placed through the vagina and cervix. There is no incision. After three months, you need a follow-up test (tubal dye study) to ensure the tubes are blocked.

Do surgery and procedures require hospital admission?

Same-day surgery and outpatient surgery are common types of hospital admission. Your care team will discuss your surgery and procedures in more detail with you.

Before you come in for surgery and procedures, M Health Fairview Procedure on Hospital Admission requires that you get tested for COVID-19, even if you are vaccinated.

If your test is NEGATIVE, please take a photo of the test and show it to the nurse when you come in for your surgery and procedures.

Please tell your surgeon’s office immediately if your test is POSITIVE. If you have COVID-19, your surgery and procedures must be postponed. Your care team will discuss these with you, and if you’ve tested POSITIVE, they’ll let you know the next steps and when you can reschedule.

If you’re going home on the same day as your surgery and procedures, please take an at-home rapid antigen test 1-2 days before. If you’re staying overnight in the hospital, get a PCR test from a lab four days before your procedure.

*They cannot accept tests more than four days old

How do you prepare for surgery and procedures?

After your COVID-19 test and before surgery and procedures, please follow these safety guidelines:

  • Limit trips outside your home
  • Limit the number of people you see
  • Always wear a face covering outside your home
  • Use social distancing
  • Stay 6 feet away from others whenever you can
  • Wash hands often

The team will go over your surgery or procedure in more detail before your scheduled visit so that you feel well-informed and comfortable.
