As individuals, we are more in tune with our bodies than anyone else, so feeling like we cannot control muscles or functions can be frustrating. Woman of all ages can have bothersome symptoms related to the muscles that make up the pelvic floor, the area surrounding the pelvis and its adjacent organs. From mild aches to more severe discomforts that can affect everyday life, there are ways to strengthen and treat these ailments to regain optimal function.
Here are 4 steps that can be taken to strengthen your pelvis:
Areas of the body most susceptible to a weak pelvis are: the bladder, urethra, vagina, uterus and rectum. Women who suffer from weakening of their pelvic support may experience pulling sensations, lower back pain, bulging organs around the pelvic and vaginal areas, and urinary incontinence. Symptoms can also include restricted mobility due to pelvic or vaginal pressure, especially when standing or sitting, and experiencing discomfort with intercourse.
Although these issues are commonly associated with women who have had children, pelvic support problems are not always caused by childbirth. Other causes include an injury to the pelvis or associated spinal area, a surgical procedure that puts strain on the body, and being overweight.
If you are experiencing symptoms due to changes in your pelvic floor make sure to talk with your Ob/Gyn provider. We will do an initial assessment and discuss treatment options. These treatments will likely include the lifestyle changes listed above and/or physical therapy. For some woman surgical correction may be indicated.
Recognize the symptoms of a weak pelvis, take action and don’t be afraid to consult an ObGyn specialist about persisting discomforts or issues.
