As the COVID-19 vaccine distribution accelerates in Minnesota, many women are checking with their medical providers to see if they should get the vaccine. Recent clinical trials are showing evidence that the vaccine is safe and highly effective for pregnant women and their babies. Clinical trials and research about the COVID-19 vaccine for pregnant and breastfeeding women will continue in the coming weeks and months, and we will provide updates as we learn more.

Q: I’m not pregnant now, but I’m trying to get pregnant. Can I get a COVID-19 vaccine?

A: Yes, you can get the COVID-19 vaccine, and you don’t need to wait to get pregnant after you receive the vaccine. Do note, however, that some vaccines require two doses. If you get the vaccine and find out you’re pregnant, you should still get the second dose.

Q: I’m pregnant right now. Is it safe to get a COVID-19 vaccine?

A: As of April 2021, ACOG published results of clinical testing on pregnant and breastfeeding women. The research showed that COVID-19 vaccines using mRNA technology (currently Pfizer and Moderna) are very effective at protecting pregnant women. It further suggests that unborn babies may receive increased protection, as well. This is the first time that we have results of testing on pregnant and breastfeeding women, who were excluded from the first large-scale clinical trials as a typical research precaution. Consult with your provider if you are unsure about getting the vaccine or would like additional information.

Q: I’m breastfeeding my baby. Can I get a COVID-19 vaccine?

Yes, based on ACOG’s recommendation, you can get the vaccine and continue breastfeeding. Research published in March 2021 suggests that breastfeeding babies may receive increased protection, as well (USA Today).

Q: Can I get vaccinated at Southdale ObGyn?

A: Currently only government-approved entities will be providing the vaccine, which includes hospitals and some pharmacies. We will let you know if we’re able to offer the vaccine. You can get information on the timeline and potential locations for vaccines on the “Operation Warp Speed” website through the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Q: What is v-safe?

A: It is a COVID-19 vaccine pregnancy registry to learn more about and gather data from patients who are pregnant and have received the COVID-19 vaccine. The information is critical to helping individuals and their healthcare providers make informed decisions about COVID-19 vaccination. It is a voluntary registry and if you’d like to take part please visit the V-Safe site to learn how you can be involved.
