Women who choose Southdale ObGyn have options. Our certified nurse-midwives give excellent prenatal, delivery and postpartum care. Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are Masters prepared advanced practice nurses who are licensed by the Minnesota Board of Nursing and certified through the American Midwifery Certification Board. A CNM guides pregnant women through the physical and emotional challenges of pregnancy and offer personalized labor support.

The CNMs at Southdale OBGyn will take time in your prenatal visits to address comfort measures during pregnancy, nutrition, and exercise. We recognize this is a big life change and will give you support while adjusting to your new role. CNMs will educate you on all the options for delivery and help you come up with birth plan that meets your needs. We work collaboratively with the obstetricians at Southdale ObGyn to give you and your baby the best care possible.

When most people hear the word “midwife” they automatically think about pregnancy and birth. But did you know that certified nurse-midwives also treat gynecological issues, provide contraceptive counseling, and evaluate and treat menopausal symptoms?

Certified nurse-midwives do more than deliver babies! At your annual wellness visit, a CNM will discuss diet, exercise, and age appropriate preventative care and screening tests. In addition to annual wellness exams, CNMs at Southdale ObGyn can assist you with problems like abnormal menstrual bleeding, pre-menstrual syndrome, breast complaints, pelvic pain and STD screening. Certified nurse-midwives can prescribe medications and order any tests that you may need.

A CNM is trained to offer women a variety of contraceptive options. She will take the time to discuss your needs and find contraception that is right for you and your lifestyle. Certified nurse-midwives can insert and remove IUDs and contraceptive implants. The CNMs at Southdale also offer pre-conception consultation. At these visits, the CNM reviews your history and your family history. She may recommend preconception testing or a diet and exercise program to improve your health prior to pregnancy. If you are having difficulty getting pregnant, the CNM can help you investigate the problem and work towards solutions to improve your chances of conception.

Symptoms of perimenopause can present new challenges to a woman’s life. CNMs are trained to help women navigate this time with confidence and comfort. From hot flashes to mood swings, a CNM can come up with a plan of care to help control or reduce bothersome symptoms and provide resources for support and education.
