Certified Nurse Midwives

Our Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are expertly trained, experienced professionals who embrace a “low-tech, high-touch” approach to healthcare for women — from the teen years to childbearing, menopause and beyond. No matter what your age or stage of life, a midwife may be the perfect fit for you.

Our midwives see patients at our Edina and Burnsville clinic locations and perform deliveries at Fairview Southdale Hospital.

  • Midwives for Gyn Care

We believe a good midwife is someone who listens to patient expectations and collaborates with the patient to meet them. Our certified nurse midwives are well trained to provide gynecological care for women of all ages.

Our midwives meet you where you are and guide you through all stages of life, from teen years through life’s changes. From helping you choose the right birth control to easing the symptoms of menopause, they are by your side and collaborate with our physicians, as needed.

  • Midwives for OB Care

You may choose to begin your care with a certified nurse midwife before you become pregnant,  at the beginning of your pregnancy, or up to 32 weeks.   Women with low risk pregnancies, seeking minimal intervention during pregnancy and delivery, will be thrilled with the level of personal and professional support offered by our midwives. They are endorsed and backed by a team of physicians, so there is always consultation and treatment available in the event of unexpected complications.  They will personalize the process and help guide you through all the phases of pregnancy, working to ensure your good health and the health of your baby.

When you go into labor, your midwife will meet you at the hospital and spend time with you as labor progresses. She will work with you and your family, encouraging and coaching you along the way.  She will be there to steady and guide you as birth approaches and will work with the hospital staff to help you achieve a healthy delivery. Our midwives also care for you in the postpartum period, including any care needed after delivery and your postpartum visit.

  • How are CNM's different from obstetricians & gynecologists?

Certified Nurse Midwives or CNM’s have earned a Master’s of Science in Nursing, with a specialty in midwifery.

Obstetrician/gynecologists (M.D.’s. or D.O.’s) have completed four years of medical school, a four-year residency program (through which they become surgical-medical doctors), and sometimes a three-year fellowship in another subspecialty, such as infertility or gynecological oncology.

In short, midwives are not surgeons, so they cannot perform C-sections. They are also not allowed to use forceps and vacuums to facilitate delivery.
