Physician

(What is a D.O.?)

Biography/Personal Interests

“In D.O. school, we were taught to emphasize the mind, body, and spirit connection in health,” he says. “But I think I may have chosen osteopathy because I already did that naturally. It’s a philosophy of care I really like — to treat the whole person.”

To Jaqua’s patients, this means having a doctor who is open to exploring options that complement a traditional birth plan, such as having a doula present at the birth, or using alternative treatments like physical therapy, hydrotherapy, or acupuncture to relieve stress and discomfort — so long as the treatments are safe and beneficial.

Jaqua says his parents have always been an inspiration to him. “My Dad’s a third-grade teacher, and my Mom works for a printing company in Mankato,” he says. “They did foster care, and I have an adopted brother. They’re just good people.”  To earn money for college, Jaqua served as a medic in the Minnesota Army National Guard — an experience that led to his “nothing else will do” goal of becoming a doctor.A second “nothing else will do” decision came from his first hospital rotation in medical school—in ob/gyn. “I can’t think of anything more rewarding than following a woman throughout her pregnancy and delivering a baby at the end of it,” he says. “That gives me the greatest joy.”

Jaqua describes himself as easy to talk to, kind, hard-working, patient, and calm. “I’m also constantly learning,” he says. “I believe that to be a good doctor, you need to know what you know, and what you don’t know. You need that insight to continue to improve and grow in the ever-changing world of medicine and surgery. A good doctor needs to be adaptable, humble, and always have a desire to learn.”

In his spare time, Jaqua likes to run, bike, downhill ski, play golf, camp, and, most of all, spend time with his wife, Maureen, a pediatric hospitalist, and their two sons, Ernie and Frankie.

“I’m proud of my wife and sons, and the life we’re building here in Minnesota,” he says, “and I’m especially proud that I’ve found a job through which I can continue to give back — for the rest of my life.”
