Ultrasound (Gyn)

An ultrasound is an effective method your provider may use to further understand and evaluate:

  • Uterine and ovarian anatomy
  • Unexplained pain or bleeding
  • IUD location
  • Follicular monitoring for infertility

Pelvic structures can be imaged with a full or empty bladder. Your exam could require one or both methods.

  • A transabdominal ultrasound is done by scanning over the top of the pelvis. This type of imaging is done with a FULL bladder.
  • A transvaginal ultrasound is done using a slim probe that is inserted into the vagina and should not be an uncomfortable exam. This type of imaging is done with an EMPTY bladder and gives detailed information.

At the time of your exam, our sonographer will determine which approach is best for you.  All patients will be instructed to drink 8 ounces of fluid one hour prior to an exam.
